2015 A City in a Garden
When I arrived in Singapore in 1979, it was known as the Garden City - a result of LKY's 'clean and green' movement which began in the 1960s. Today, the Garden City is evolving into a City in a Garden. Despite being just 700 square metres large (or small, more accurately) almost 10% of Singapore comprises parks and nature reserves. While in most developed countries the land area covered by vegetation (the 'green cover') decreases as green makes way for concrete, in Singapore the reverse has happened - over the last 20 years or so, the 'green cover' has increased from about 36% to 47%. Friends who laughed about the instant trees that used to appear ever so often all over the country, are now grateful for all the 'green cover' :) This series is a work in progress - just like the city in a garden - and was inspired by a dear friend (who laughed 30 years ago and who now is one of the biggest 'park supporters' I know).
